I exported all my posts in wordpress and re imported them once I re installed it all and low and behold it all worked! And perfectly! very impressed. It also cleaned all the junk from my wordpress installation, all those non working themes.

Comes down the pipe like sh*t off a shovel:-) AND it all looks very good. Worth the effort of a reinstall I reckon. I suspect the conflicts created by the old themes/widgets you mention could be partly to blame – files get overwritten ad updated and sometimes the only thing to do is rub it out and start again.
