It’s no secret that the digital industry is booming. From exciting startups to global brands, companies are reaching out to digital agencies, responding to the new possibilities available. However, the industry is fast becoming overcrowded, heaving with agencies offering similar services — on the surface, at least.
Producing creative, fresh projects is the key to standing out. Unique side projects are the best place to innovate, but balancing commercially and creatively lucrative work is tricky. So, this article looks at how to make side projects work and why they’re worthwhile, drawing on lessons learned from our development of the ux ompanion app.

WordPress was in it’s infancy & I (Ollie) was keen to learn as much as I could about getting my content and code, yep, no GITHUB back then, onto the Internet for all to see via a quick and easy Content Management System. Skip forwards 15+ years, a second degree, several companies sold and a professional career, the very same blog is alive and kicking.
Now OLLIESBLOG is used as my “tracking hub” for different projects and business ventures I’m running. For this reason I’ve given OLLIESBLOG the tag line…
“Thoughtful Life Testing”
I think this nicely summarises what I’m trying to achieve and it’s a lot more elegant that “random shit“.
I’ve used OLLIESBLOG in both a private and public state as my primary note taking platform, ideas hub and place to share “life experiments” I’ve undertaken over the years. I’ve found that when I’m announcing something, like a goal, publicly I feel more accountable to achieve it. This works well for me, so this is one reason, albeit selfish, to keep OLLIESBLOG.com live.
Finally to give a little more context to the topics covered in this blog, I’ve found that during my professional working career, primarily in Online Marketing, I’ve always had solid bussiness acumen surrounding technological trends and the direction of online products and services, mostly because I spend my time, developing, reading, researching and using technology and have done so for the best part of 20 years.
I made my first $500 USD in just 3 days when I was 15 years old, before Google existed, I optimised a website to make money via “AllAdvantage“, my Dad promised to double any money I made at the time. I never held him to it, but I was instantly hooked.
I’ve been working in the online industry ever since. I took a bit of a sideline during University as I pursued a career as a professional athlete, which you can read more about here, before getting back into my “working career“, launching and selling my first business out of Uniersity then starting a career in Online Marketing.
Between building startup businesses I’ve spent time working in a range of comapnies and corporations, during this time I fully commit to my line of work, so I’ve never really taken the time to shout about my achievements. Something that being good at Online Marketing allows you do to very well.
After singing the praises for companies and people (reputation management), I’ve learnt it’s the best way to get noticed, especially when you’re taking more of a “corporate” route, so to now “scratch an itch” and empty my ideas into the ether, I’ve decided to put my thoughts and feelings about technology trends, my own life experiments and anything else I feel like blogging about online, right here. Fortunately as everything is nicely aligned “as one“, I’ve found some time to do this.
